So today, while at work, I get a call from one of the “side clients”. Panicked voice.. “Perun… my computer just crashed!!! I have no idea what to do… OMG… Im gonna loose everything!!!!”.. Calmly I asked what is happening… So the client replies “Computer crashed, then I heard clicks from the tower!!!”

Fearing that it may be dying hard drive, I calmed the client down, and headed out there after work. I test the drive, and its beautifully clean, S.M.A.R.T reporting good, everything is green across the board… Upon further investigation it turned out that her computer did indeed crash night before. Yes, the clients computer is indeed a Dell.. its five years old… and yes, it has a modem. Windows XP had somehow corrupted modem drivers, which borked the PC, and caused it to BSOD and reboot…

So disabling the modem worked. Furthermore, had to reconfigure client’s network settings, firewall, as well as IE connection settings. Fine.. then installed MS Word and Excell 2007, which somehow got uninstalled, and MS Word 2003.  Furthermore, the client had a huge confusion with regards to saving in MS  Office 2003 format vs. Office 2007..

Two hours go by, the client’s happy.  Oh, and the supposed beeping?  It became apparent when I was there.  Source?  The TV downstairs, echoes upstairs (the computer is located near open space), so when sitting next to the tower, it sounds like the TV cars honk, it sounds like the PC is honking (mildly)
